Philippians 1:1-11
First sermon on new Philippians series. The joke was made this will probably go on for years
The book of Philippians is a thank you note for a care package Paul received. They sent money for Paul’s needs in prison (Philippians 4).
This book, Philippians, shows the full deity and humanity of Christ. This was in response to the heresy that was going on at the time that Christ was nothing more than an Angel.
The book of Colossians looks at Christ as the fullness of God. Because of His death, everything has been covered by God. It is because of faith alone that we are saved. We don’t need to do anything to add to it. (more…)
God Won’t Give Up on the Believer
I was reading Romans 1 in my quiet time and wanted to share some thoughts on how God won’t give up on the believer.
Romans 1:26-32 (NASB)
[26] For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, [27] and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.
[28] Note And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, [29] being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, [30] slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, [31] without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; [32] and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.<\i>
Have you, as a believer, ever wondered how someone living in sin could think it was okay? Do they not feel bad inside and how can they go to bed at night? God allows the unbeliever, who refuses to submit their lives to Him and repent, to be numb to bias morality.
On the other hand, this explains why a Christian, living in sin, is the most miserable being in the world. God can’t give them over to a depraved mind because they are His. He is going to keep squeezing them tighter and tighter until they return to Him.

Sin and a lack of control brought great disaster upon many talented men like Mel Gibson and OJ Simpson.
Dr James Dobson says that every parent needs to teach their kid that life is loaded. All actions have consequences.
David himself went through this when he had an affair, had a man killed to cover it up, and thought all would be okay. God had other plans. This sin brought problems to his kids.
Psalm 51 is a vertical Psalm about sin. Psalm 32 is a horizontal Psalm about sin. (more…)

[26] While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”
[27] Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. [28] This is my blood of the* covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. “Joy in Fellowship”
How many people do you know who are just overflowing with joy? We tend to be half glass empty people… especially believers. How can we, as children of God, lack joy? We need to have joy that laughs in the face of trials, infects others, and showcases the overflowing and ever lasting joy of our Heavenly Father.
It is time for us as a church–us as the Children of God–return to the the joy of the Lord.
Philippians 1:1-11 (NIV)
[Phl 1:1] Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus,
To all the saints in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers* and deacons:
[2] Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Thanksgiving and Prayer
[3] I thank my God every time I remember you. [4] In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy [5] because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, [6] being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
[7] It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart; for whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me. [8] God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.
[9] And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, [10] so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, [11] filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.
Paul is pointing the Philippians to the joy found in Christ Jesus in the first 11 verses in chapter 1.
What is true Christian Fellowship? Why is it that we don’t seem have time for Genuine Christian Fellowship?
Three Connecting Points for Genuine Fellowship:
(1) I Have You in My Mind
Philippians 1:3-6
[3] I thank my God every time I remember you. [4] In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy [5] because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, [6] being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
Paul was not thinking about bills at home, he wasn’t thinking of other things… he was only thinking about his brothers and sisters in Philippi.
Paul knows that even though he has been pulled away from his ministry in Philippi, they will flourish, be joyful, and continue the good fruit that was built there (while Paul was still amongst them). How often do we hear of a minister leaving a church and they place they were at were flourishing and continue growing in their faith afterwards? Usually it ends up with hurt feelings, bitter relationships, and lack of joy. God never intended this.
Are you the kind of Christian friend that brings joy to others when they think of you? If not, you need to plant seeds of goodness, generosity, joy, etc.
(2) I Have You in My Heart
Philippians 1:7-8
[7] It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart; for whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me. [8] God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.
We need to let people get on our hearts–NOT our NERVES.
How do we know that people are on our hearts?
(a) We have Genuine Concern towards others
(b) We have a Willingness to Forgive others
(c) We have a Willingness to Sacrifice for others
(3) I Have Your in My Prayers
Philippians 1:9-11
[9] And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, [10] so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, [11] filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.
You don’t really love someone until you intercede, for them, to our Heavenly Father. There is real power in intercessory prayer.
If you don’t feel intimately connected to your church or to people? Then you aren’t involved in prayer. As a church grows–so does its congregation’s prayer lives.
When we connect to people in our mind, in our hearts, and in our prayers, there is no way we can’t be overfilled with joy. Jesus came that we might have life and have life abundantly and that our joy may be overflowing. God, help us connect to others as you intended so we too can be filled with the true joy of Christ.
